Premium 9" marine chartplotter from Garmin GPSMAP series, chartplotter only, no built-in sonar. U.S. Coastal BlueChart g3 Pre-Loaded. Priced at $1399.

Garmin GPSMAP 943 9" Marine Chartplotter

The Garmin GPSMAP 943 is part of Garmin's premium GPSMAP marine chartplotter line, different from the ECHOMAP line in both positioning and capability. While ECHOMAP is primarily a fishfinder with chartplotter integration, GPSMAP is primarily a chartplotter with optional sonar. This one is a chartplotter-only unit, it does NOT have built-in sonar processing. Use as a primary navigation unit on a networked boat where another GPSMAP or ECHOMAP handles sonar, and ships with BlueChart g3 U.S. coastal cartography pre-loaded, full Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coast coverage including marina detail, tide stations, and harbor charts.

Understanding the name: The "7/9" is the screen size. The first digit after is the series (2 = Worldwide basemap, 4 = U.S. Coastal). The "3" is the generation. "Xsv" on the end means the unit supports CHIRP + ClearV + SideV sonar. So "723Xsv" = 7" GPSMAP with Worldwide basemap and sonar capability. "943" = 9" GPSMAP with U.S. Coastal maps and NO sonar. Garmin naming is cryptic but consistent.

GPSMAP vs ECHOMAP: GPSMAP is designed for serious marine applications, offshore boats, sportfishers, charter operations, commercial vessels. Full Garmin Marine Network support includes radar (GMR Fantom/xHD), cameras (GC series), Reactor autopilot integration, thru-hull transducer support, and premium multi-display networking. ECHOMAP is designed for bass boats and recreational anglers first. If your boat is a bass boat or pontoon, ECHOMAP UHD2 or Ultra 2 is probably the right family. If your boat is a center console, sportfisher, or charter rig, GPSMAP is probably the right family.

The "non-sonar" designation means this unit is a chartplotter ONLY, it does not have built-in CHIRP, ClearV, or SideV sonar processing. This is typical of multi-display setups where one unit handles sonar and another handles navigation/charts.

Who This Is For

This unit is best for offshore charter captains, commercial fishing operations, serious sportfishing boat owners, and multi-display rig builders, particularly captains, commercial boat operators, and multi-display rig builders who have dedicated sonar on a separate unit. U.s. coastal anglers, offshore captains, charter operators, and boaters who fish atlantic/gulf/pacific waters and want premium cartography installed out of the box. The 9" GPSMAP is the sweet spot between the 7" compact and the 10"+ large-console tiers. Enough real estate for meaningful split-screens on a sportfishing or charter boat helm.

Choose This If...

• You're running a center console, sportfisher, or charter boat, GPSMAP is designed for this buyer. Bass boat anglers are typically better served by ECHOMAP UHD2 or Ultra 2.
• You need full Garmin Marine Network integration, radar, cameras, autopilot, multi-display. ECHOMAP gets limited Marine Network; GPSMAP gets full.
• You want premium marine cartography support, BlueChart g3 Vision, Navionics Vision+, full chip flexibility across regions.
• You run a multi-display rig with dedicated sonar on another unit, the non-sonar chartplotter saves money when another unit handles sonar.
• U.S. coastal fishing, this variant's U.S. Coastal BlueChart g3 Pre-Loaded is ideal for that use case. For Worldwide basemap without regional pre-loading, pick the 923 variant.
• Your budget is around $1399, premium marine chartplotter tier, below the 10"+ GPSMAP 1000-series and 8000-series flagship territory.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between GPSMAP and ECHOMAP?

GPSMAP is Garmin's premium marine chartplotter line, designed primarily for offshore, charter, commercial, and serious sportfishing use. ECHOMAP is Garmin's mainstream fishfinder line, designed for bass boats, recreational anglers, and budget-to-mid-tier pricing. GPSMAP has premium features ECHOMAP doesn't: full Garmin Marine Network (not limited), integrated radar/camera/autopilot support, premium cartography chip support, professional marine interfaces. ECHOMAP has sonar-first integration that GPSMAP offers as an option (Xsv) or leaves out (non-sonar). Price is roughly 2x ECHOMAP at comparable screen sizes.

Do I need the Xsv variant or can I use the non-sonar version?

If this is your ONLY display on the boat, get the Xsv variant, it has sonar capability. If you're running a multi-display rig where another unit (ECHOMAP UHD2, another GPSMAP Xsv, etc.) handles sonar and this unit's job is primarily navigation/chartplotting, the non-sonar version saves $100. Common multi-display setups put a 12" sonar-primary unit on the helm and a 7"/9" non-sonar GPSMAP as the chartplotter/navigator.

What's the difference between the 2 and 4 in the model number (e.g., 723 vs 743)?

The "2" means Worldwide basemap (no pre-loaded regional cartography). The "4" means U.S. Coastal BlueChart g3 pre-loaded. So 723 = 7" Worldwide, 743 = 7" U.S. Coastal. Same hardware, different pre-installed maps. If you fish the U.S. coast, the 4 variants save you the cost of adding a BlueChart chip.

Is LiveScope supported?

Yes. GPSMAP 7"/9" units support LiveScope Plus, LiveScope XR, and LiveScope Original via the GLS 10 black box. Panoptix PS22/PS31 live sonar is also supported.

Can I use this with a Force trolling motor?

Yes. GPSMAP units integrate with Garmin Force, Force Pro, and Force Kraken trolling motors. This is more common on bay boats and inshore offshore-rigged boats than on bass boats (where ECHOMAP is the typical Garmin chartplotter choice).

Do I need professional installation?

Strongly recommended for GPSMAP units. These are typically installed in networked multi-display rigs with radar, cameras, autopilot, and thru-hull transducers, the networking, cable routing, and integration work benefits from an experienced marine electronics installer. Budget $500-$1,500 for professional installation depending on complexity.

How does this compare to the GPSMAP 1022 or GPSMAP 1222?

The 1022 (9") and 1222 (12") are the next steps up in the GPSMAP line, larger displays, same premium Marine Network support. For multi-display charter boats or offshore sportfishers, many operators run a 1242Xsv as the primary helm and 7"/9" GPSMAP units at secondary stations (flybridge, cabin), the 943 is a common secondary-display choice in that scenario.

Is this used in offshore tournaments?

Yes, commonly on center console and offshore tournament rigs. Offshore tournament circuits including IGFA events, major billfish tournaments, and kingfish circuits routinely use GPSMAP units at the helm. The premium Marine Network integration with radar and autopilot is typical for offshore tournament operations.
